Hills Echo October Column

On 14 September I spoke in Queensland Parliament on Domestic Violence and how it had affected my daughter. My family had to learn the warning signs of Domestic Violence through bitter experience. I realised then that Domestic Violence was not limited to certain social groups or to tired stereotypes.

In 2008 I became a White Ribbon Ambassador and have made it my goal to encourage other men in our community to take responsibility and play leadership roles in preventing violence against women.

In the past month in particular the scourge of Domestic Violence has risen to prominence through a series of tragic and unacceptable incidents that have shocked us on our television screens. For too many families however the violence and intimidation is real. As a community we must stand united. We must learn the early warning signs and we must end the culture of silence that allows violence against women to continue.

To this end I have been organising the following two events:

Domestic Violence Roundtable
On Tuesday 17 November from 1:30pm to 2:30pm at the Keperra Baptist Church, 980 Samford Road Keperra I will be hosting a Domestic Violence Roundtable with Minister Shannon Fentiman to discuss tackling Domestic Violence in our community. I am inviting key stakeholders from our community to attend.

White Socks Walk ‘n Wheels
On Saturday 21 November at 10:00am I am hosting a community event at the Ferny Grove State School. The White Socks Walk ‘n Wheels is a White Ribbon Community Walk that I am encouraging everyone to take part in. This White Ribbon event will raise community awareness and make the statement that we will not be silent any more. Whether you come on a push-bike or in a wheelchair, whether you wear the latest cross-trainers or a pair of old gum-boots, pull on your white socks and your loudest shirt and come on down to the school on the Saturday morning for the walk and a sausage sizzle.

I warmly welcome you to attend either or both of these events. Please contact my office to register at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. .
